This is a free online edition of the in print book Love: A New Teaching on Love by Matthew James Nygren.
All you need is love. I think that to be true with every fiber of my being. I wonder how many think the same? What I observe in the world suggests that we have given up on this idea and have written it off as a pie in the sky, utopian thought. We like to pay it lip service but do we live it out 24/7/365? Do we really think all we need is love?
If we don’t think all we need is love, then I attribute it to three barriers. We have allowed fear to overcome our thoughts. We have an unbalance between self love and love of others. We do not have a great working definition of love.
The opposite of love is not hate. It is fear. As Yoda says in Star Wars, “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” It all starts with fear. Fear in itself is not bad. It lets us know that a need is not being met. When we let fear go unchecked then unloving action is taken against ourselves and/or others.
Fear also plays into an unbalance between self love and love of others. I observe people that focus on one or the other. They either love themselves too much or they love others too much. When you add fear into this you get acts of violence ranging from murder, neglect, suicide, and oppression. We need to bring these two loves back to a yin/yang balance. This balance is achieved by having a working definition of love.
I am a single dad of one beautiful daughter. Ever since graduating from Greenville College with a degree in Religion/Youth Ministries, it has been my passion to find an all encompassing, holistic teaching that will create a paradigm shift. That teaching has come under the umbrella of love.
